MANILA, Philippines – Civic groups on Monday launched a coalition to push back against Pax Silica, a US-led initiative facing broad domestic opposition over fears of community displacement and environmental, energy, and water risks.
More than 50 organizations have signed up to join the Network Opposed to Pax Silica, a coalition of environmental activists, scientists, and Indigenous groups, according to Teddy Casiño, chairman of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan.
“Pax Silica is not just a simple investment program or industrial strategy,” Casino said. “This is the new field of economic warfare.”
“It’s a battle to see who will have control over the materials, technology and infrastructure that will be the foundation of the economy of the future,” he added.
