One look at this summer is enough to see it: our energy system is vulnerable. In early August, the Danube reached a historic low. In Hungary, the Paks nuclear power plant had to temporarily reduce its output significantly because cooling water was scarce. A power plant that normally supplies almost half of Hungary’s electricity was suddenly constrained by the water level of a river. In Romania, one of the two reactors at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant also had to be shut down.
