Athens-based architecture firm Apostolopoulos Tasoulis has won the competition to unify Thessaloniki’s archaeological sites and historical monuments.
Unanimously selected by a jury of experts and ministry officials, the winning proposal, titled “Armosi” (Joint), aims to seamlessly integrate the city’s rich cultural heritage into its modern urban landscape.
The master plan establishes a grid of public redevelopments centered on Egnatia and Aristotelous streets.
Key interventions include expanding pedestrian zones, calming traffic, enhancing green spaces, creating cultural walking routes and establishing uniform urban paving to reduce visual noise.
Additionally, the architects focused on a “double restoration,” improving physical accessibility to lower-level sites like the Roman Forum while reconnecting monuments to surrounding public areas.
