JRA pushes Lilian Ngoyi Street reopening to October due to cash-flow constraints

The reopening of Lilian Ngoyi Street in Johannesburg has been pushed back by two months, with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) now targeting October 31 for the completion of the 1.8km rehabilitation project.

Johannesburg motorists and businesses will have to wait longer for the reopening of Lilian Ngoyi Street, formerly Bree Street, after cash-flow constraints delayed rehabilitation work, with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) now saying the road should be completed by October 31, instead of the end of August.

The revised deadline comes as the JRA’s self-imposed August 30 target for the rehabilitation of the 1.8km stretch between Ntemi Piliso and End streets looms.

The JRA confirmed on Friday, August 28, that full-scale rehabilitation work on Phase 2 of the project had resumed following the resolution of recent operational cash-flow constraints.

The second phase officially began in September 2025, following the completion and partial reopening of Phase 1, which focused on beautifying the street.
