MMC for Transport in Johannesburg, Kenny Kunene, warned that the fuel cut has effectively grounded JRA operations, halting pothole repairs, traffic signal maintenance, and emergency road response work across the metro.

The City of Johannesburg has suspended all fuel supply to its Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) fleet, effectively grounding the teams responsible for maintaining the city's road network and leaving potholes unfilled, traffic lights unrepaired, and stormwater drains uncleared across the metro.

The suspension, which took effect at 15:30 on Monday, 15 June 2026, has brought critical road infrastructure operations to a halt amid worsening financial and liquidity pressures facing the municipality.

The suspension remains in place until further notice.

The move has effectively immobilised field operations of the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), preventing routine and emergency maintenance work from being carried out across Johannesburg.
