As the prime minister prepares to unveil his measures at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), more than 1,660 branded and private-label products are now being offered at supermarkets at discounts of up to 30%.Meanwhile, an extension of the fuel subsidy also appears increasingly necessary, with the measure due to expire on Monday, given that drivers are still facing pump prices of more than €2 per litre, despite the decline in the international price of Brent crude to $88 a barrel. An extension of the subsidy on diesel is almost certain, with industry professionals warning of the risk of further increases in the prices of goods and services if it is not extended. Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos recently said that the issue had already been discussed with the prime minister and that he expected the measure to be extended. What remains to be clarified is the duration of the extension and whether refineries will participate, as they did over the previous two months.Price cuts on more than 1,660 productsAs of Monday, more than 1,660 products will be sold at lower prices in supermarkets as the National Price Reduction Initiative is launched for at least four months. A range of branded and private-label products, as well as school supplies, will now be sold at discounts ranging from 5% to 30%.More than 90 suppliers, 12 supermarket chains and three toy and school-supply chains are taking part in the initiative. The reduced prices will be clearly marked on supermarket shelves with special signage.Consumers will also be able to access information digitally via the “PosoKanei” platform, which lists participating businesses, the product codes included in the initiative and the discounts being applied. The initiative will run until the end of the year, with businesses able to renew their product lists after the first two months. An estimate of the monthly value of the price reductions on participating products is also expected to be presented today, providing an indication in monetary terms of the potential benefit for consumers.
