Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the throne at the age of three, has died at 34.
The Tooro Kingdom announced his death on Thursday, bringing an end to a 31-year reign that began in 1995 after the death of his father.
The kingdom did not disclose the cause of death. Ugandan media, however, quoted a government minister as saying the king had been critically ill and was receiving medical treatment in the United States.
Oyo was only three when he inherited the throne, making him the youngest king in the world at the time. A regency was established to govern the kingdom during his childhood, with his mother, the Queen Mother, among those involved.
He was formally crowned in 2010 after turning 18.
