African Bank has appointed Zweli Manyathi permanently as Group CEO, following regulatory approval, as the lender grapples with financial challenges and a proposed restructuring affecting workers and branches

Embattled African Bank has formally appointed Zweli Manyathi as its permanent Group CEO, following approval from the Prudential Authority and months after he took over in an interim capacity.

The bank confirmed the appointment in a SENS announcement on Wednesday, saying Manyathi’s appointment follows an ongoing review of the bank’s board and committee structures, as well as its succession planning.

He has been with African Bank since 2022, when he joined as an executive director and Chief Executive: Business & Commercial.

"Mr Manyathi holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B Com) (Hons) (Financial Management), completed through the University of South Africa (UNISA). In addition, he completed a Senior Executive Programme (SEP) through both Wits’ and Harvard’s Business Schools, as well as a Professional Development Programme (PDP) through the City University of New York."
