Professional photographer Xolani Sithole went back in time to when he used to ride on his mother Busisiwe Thwala's back all day while she did chores around the house. The picture was taken as a demonstration for his photographic class at his former school in Klaarwater, Pinetown.

Parents need to support their children who would like to follow their creative passion and go for artistic careers or businesses after school.

This is part of the message Durban artist and art teacher Zanele Nsindane is hoping will be spread through a photographic exhibition her school is opening on Friday.

Part of Women’s Month celebrations, the exhibition is opening on Friday at Phakathi Secondary School, a no-fee school in Klaarwater, Pinetown.

“Parents and families must support their learners. If a kid wants to do art, many parents don’t understand it. You get someone asking: ‘Uzoyenzani i-art; uzosebenzaphi? (What will you use art for; where will you work?).
