The South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone has initiated a network-wide drive to clean and disinfect drinking water tanks, filtration systems, and dispensing points across its jurisdiction, according to railway officials in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.The drive covers 385 railway stations in Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring regions, spanning Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, and Guntakal divisions. The zone manages a daily supply of over 45 lakh litres of drinking water across platform taps, water coolers, and vending machines.Railway officials stated that the project focuses on inspecting the supply chain from the water source to the final delivery point. Maintenance teams are draining, desludging, and disinfecting underground, overhead, and plastic storage tanks. Protective covers and mesh guards are being installed on tank vents and overflow outlets to prevent contamination.Technicians are inspecting reverse osmosis units, ultraviolet purifiers, and water vending machines. Filter candles are being replaced where required. Engineering staff are conducting pipeline checks to repair leaks and prevent cross-contamination between drinking water and non-potable lines. Water drawn from borewells and hand pumps is also being tested and treated.Quality control teams are collecting water samples from the source, storage tanks, and station taps for physical, chemical, and bacteriological analysis. Staff are recording daily measurements of residual chlorine levels to ensure required standards are maintained.Station-wise reports detailing infrastructure defects and repairs are being submitted to the zonal headquarters in Visakhapatnam for monitoring.
