OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads launch in India aims to transform digital advertising by enhancing contextual consumer engagement strategies.

OpenAI’s move to launch ChatGPT Ads in India is expected to fundamentally alter digital advertising landscape and reshape consumer engagement strategies, accelerating the shift towards contextual advertising.Announcing the rollout on Thursday, OpenAI said ads will begin appearing for logged-in adult users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans, with more than 50 brands set to go live in India this week. Although OpenAI has stressed that ads will not influence ChatGPT’s answers and user data is not sold to advertisers, experts pointed out that a lot rides on users’ trust. The content and context of conversations are precisely what make conversational advertising potentially more powerful than conventional targeted advertising. The ability to understand what a consumer is looking for, the questions they are asking and where they are in the purchase journey could allow advertising to be delivered at a far more consequential moment.“ChatGPT Ads are not simply another inventory launch. They introduce paid distribution inside the decision-making layer when consumers are describing their needs, comparing trade-offs and moving towards a choice. The context is much richer than a conventional search keyword. The entire channel ultimately depends on one promise that brands cannot buy influence over ChatGPT’s answers,” said Viren Inaniya, Co-founder & CEO, Trucommmerce.Separate layers“Brands will compete across two separate layers earning an organic recommendation and winning a clearly labelled sponsored placement. If those layers blur, users will reject the format quickly,” he noted.Brands will need to understand the prompts influencing purchase decisions, create context-specific ads, keep product information current and connect ChatGPT engagement to actual leads, transactions and revenue.Stating that this has the potential to fundamentally change the digital advertising landscape, Rajesh Sethi Partner and Leader-Media, Entertainment and Sports, PwC India, added that with this ChatGPT is attempting to now not only own the discovery layer but also the decision layer. “But one will need to wait and watch how this evolves, especially how user trust gets built,” Sethi added.WPP and Omnicom will be OpenAI’s first agency partners for ChatGPT Ads in India with more than 50 brands looking to go live with their ads on ChatGPT this week.Paramdeep Singh, Co-founder, Shorthills AI said this model can work only if the ad is clearly marked as an ad. “The moment sponsored content starts looking like an editorial answer, an advertorial dressed up as AI’s own advice, trust breaks down fast. That is the one line these companies cannot afford to cross,” he pointed out.At the same time, Shekhar Sharma, Senior Partner-Growth, Hashtag Orange noted that brands can no longer rely purely on traditional keyword-based search ads and will need to think in terms of “intent and context” since users are having conversations rather than typing queries.Noting that conversational AI could become an important new layer of the advertising ecosystem, Santosh Kumar Chief Operating Officer, INNOCEAN India pointed out that the real question will be how conversational AI fits into the wider media mix and how brands can connect creative, media, data and technology to build a more connected consumer experience.(Inputs from Sindhu Hariharan in Chennai)Published on August 27, 2026
