The "We Continue the Change" (PP) parliamentary group plans to introduce legislation that would allow taxis to use bus lanes when carrying passengers, with individual municipalities given the authority to decide which lanes could be opened and under what conditions.
Party leader Asen Vassilev said the proposal would remove the current legal ban on taxis with passengers using bus lanes while leaving municipalities to regulate the arrangement locally.
“The bill provides for each municipality to decide for itself which bus lanes and under what conditions can be opened for taxis,” Vassilev said.
The party argues that the change would make taxi journeys more predictable and potentially cheaper because passengers would spend less time stuck in traffic and would therefore face fewer waiting charges.
PP lawmaker Ivo Mihaylov said the measure could be particularly useful for parents taking children to school, people who are ill and tourists trying to reach railway stations or airports on time.
