Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked Bulgaria for its support and friendship, saying Ukraine sees significant potential in strengthening relations between the two countries.
In a post on X early Wednesday, Zelensky responded to a letter from Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova marking Ukraine's Independence Day on August 24. He said Ukraine “deeply values Bulgaria's support and friendship” and added that the two countries have much to gain from further developing their bilateral ties.
In her letter, Yotova sent her “most sincere congratulations and best wishes for peace and prosperity for the Ukrainian people” on the occasion of Ukraine's national holiday.
She also praised the strength and determination of Ukrainians defending their country's independence, sovereignty and European future during what she described as one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine's modern history.
Yotova reiterated Bulgaria's position that a just and sustainable peace should be based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law. She said diplomacy and negotiations should have a leading role in ending the fighting and reaching a lasting political settlement.
