Costa is meeting with capitals to gauge priorities for the next EU budget
European Council President António Costa closed out his Baltic tour by calling for the Eastern flank to remain a priority in the budget agenda.
Costa finished the Baltic leg of his three-week tour on Tuesday, meeting with capitals to gauge priorities for the next EU budget and reach a deal before 2027.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have all faced repeated air incursions from the war in Ukraine. The group is backing the Commission’s proposal to earmark €131 billion for defence and space, and is calling for the next budget to support the region facing war at its borders.
“The strengthening of the European Union’s Eastern flank needs to be clearly reflected in the new EU budget,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said on Tuesday, adding that the future budget should increase support for defence, military mobility, and the protection of strategic infrastructure.
