Aubrey Tsengwa
A police captain has been killed in a shootout while investigating the murder of former mayor and ANC ward councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, raising concerns over escalating violence in Knysna.
The officer, attached to the provincial Tactical Response Team (TRT), was killed during an operation at the Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road in the early hours of Wednesday.
A 38-year-old suspect was also killed during the shootout. Tsengwa, serving as Ward 8 councillor, was shot dead in Joodsekamp on 19 August. He had been travelling in a vehicle with three passengers when an attacker opened fire on the vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot. One of the passengers was wounded.
Western Cape police said the captain formed part of an integrated police team deployed to Knysna following Tsengwa's murder and that of two other men in separate shooting incidents last week.
