A police captain and a suspect were killed in a shootout at the Sewende Laan informal settlement in Knysna on Wednesday.
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) in the Western Cape has condemned the killing of a 50-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) captain who was shot dead during an early-morning operation in Knysna on Wednesday.
The officer, attached to the Western Cape Tactical Response Team, was part of an integrated operation investigating a series of high-profile local murders, including the recent assassination of former Knysna mayor and serving councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, as well as the subsequent killings of Mandla Matiwane and Mandla Tyololo.
The fatal shooting occurred at the Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road while officers were following leads regarding illegal firearms.
A 38-year-old suspect was also killed in the exchange of gunfire, and two firearms were recovered at the scene.
