A police captain and a suspect were shot dead in a shootout at the Sewende Laan informal settlement in Knysna on Wednesday
A police captain deployed to Knysna to investigate the murder of former mayor Aubrey Tsengwa was gunned down in a shootout with a suspect, who also died, in the early hours of Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the incident occurred at the Sewende Laan informal settlement in Uniondale Road.
"The captain, aged 50, was attached to the provincial Tactical Response Team and deployed in the area as part of investigations into the murder of councillor and former mayor of Knysna, Aubrey Tsengwa, as well as two others in separate shooting incidents last week," Potelwa said.
"At the time of the captain's death, [our] integrated team was executing an operation following up on information about illegal firearms.
