Poompuhar outlet on Big Bazaar Street organised an exhibition-cum-sale of Krishna dolls for Krishna Janmashtami.T. Malathi, manager of the outlet, said there are dolls made of clay, rose wood, sandal wood, white wood, black and white metal, bronze, brass, and paper mache apart from Thanjavur paintings. While the clay and paper mache dolls are made by local artisans, the brass idols have come from Poompuhar’s workshops in the State. There are idols that are from other States as well.“We are looking at a total sales of ₹12 lakhs from this exhibition,” she said.There are also products made by the tribeswomen of the Nilgiris. Cushion covers, pouches, dresses, and shawls with Toda embroidery, Kurumba paintings with vengai (natural) dyes, Petta Kurumba bamboo key stands, and earthenware made by Kota tribal people from local clay are also on display for sale.“We trained 60 Kota tribeswomen last financial year to make earthenware. Each received total stipend of ₹21,000 for the three month training. The products they made are up for sale now,” she added. Published - August 26, 2026 08:45 pm IST
