Speeding e-scooters and high-powered electric bikes on the Sea Point Promenade are facing tougher restrictions as the City of Cape Town moves to introduce an 8km/h speed limit, pedestrian right-of-way and possible fines and impoundments.
The City’s Recreation and Parks Department is finalising a Sea Point Promenade Management Protocol aimed at regulating the growing number of e-scooters, e-bikes and other electric mobility devices using one of Cape Town’s busiest recreational spaces.
The protocol and new signage are expected to be finalised and published by the end of August, while a separate compliance system for commercial rental operators is planned for September.
The move comes amid concerns about the increasing number, speed and size of electric devices using the Promenade, particularly high-powered sit-on scooters that can carry more than one person.
