Electric scooters on the Sea Point Promenade.

The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department is exploring ways to address safety concerns caused by electric scooters and bicyles along the Sea Point Promenade, while its service providers defend its use.

Community Services mayco member, Francine Higham, said: “The City’s Recreation and Parks Department is looking at possible initiatives to be implemented on the promenade to address the current situation and concerns between the various users. This will be communicated in due time."

In an incident in April, a 7-year-old girl was knocked to the ground by a speeding electric scooter, leaving her with significant bruising and facial cuts, while her 10-year-old sister was almost knocked over by a second scooter rider.

Before that, a woman was watching over her children, when a scooter came speeding towards them. Fortunately, the rider gained control of the racing scooter, avoiding a crash.
