Illegal firearms must be removed from our streets, says the writer
Cape Town’s violent crime crisis is no longer something that can be described as an occasional outbreak of criminality. It is a persistent threat to the lives and livelihoods of residents across the city.
Just weeks ago, 11 people were killed in three separate shootings in Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha in the space of a single night. Five people were killed in Langa, three in Khayelitsha and three in Gugulethu, with two more people injured in the Gugulethu attack.
And the violence has not stopped.
On Sunday, August 23, a 27-year-old man was shot and killed in Gugulethu’s Europe informal settlement, with police opening murder and attempted-murder investigations.
