Cape Town’s renewed push for greater policing powers has been thrust into the spotlight after 11 people were killed in three mass shootings over the weekend, with policing experts warning that expanding Metro Police powers alone will not stop the bloodshed.
The shootings unfolded in Khayelitsha, Langa and Gugulethu between Saturday night and early Sunday morning, leaving 11 people dead and two others wounded in just a few hours.
In Khayelitsha, three men, aged 25, 31 and 35, were killed in TR Section, Lingelethu West, at about 10.50pm on Saturday.
Around the same time, gunmen struck in Winnie Mandela Street in Phase 3, Langa, where four men and a woman were shot dead.
