Partial states of emergency have been declared in two Bulgarian municipalities after torrential rain caused flooding, infrastructure damage and agricultural losses, while Sofia continued cleanup operations following a powerful hailstorm and the search remained underway for a man swept away by a river in Peshtera.
In Satovcha municipality, a partial state of emergency was declared after heavy rain hit the area on Monday afternoon. The village of Kochan was the worst affected, with intense rainfall turning streets into rivers for about an hour and a half.
Numerous homes were flooded, with water reaching ground floors and damaging furniture, electrical appliances, tools and other belongings. Agricultural production also suffered significant losses. Many gardens were submerged and the harvest was reportedly destroyed.
The storm also damaged public infrastructure. Sections of street pavement were washed away, at least four retaining walls collapsed and sewer systems became clogged. Large quantities of mud, stones, sand and ballast accumulated on streets in Kochan and along the road connecting the village with Zhizhevo.
The Satovcha municipality has begun emergency recovery work following the rainfall. Municipal workers and equipment are clearing debris, reopening affected roads and carrying out urgent repairs.
