Just outside Glacier National Park, Green Valley Ranch has been tied to the same family for more than a century, passing through several hands and operating as a dude ranch before returning in 1999 to descendants of its original homesteading owners, George and Gussie Green, who raised their family and operated a sawmill there.
The current owners of the 477-acre spread, Dr. Howard Steel and his wife, Betty Jo, already had a Montana retreat on Lake McDonald, which was a popular getaway among their extended family. According to listing agent Bill McDavid of Hall & Hall, they learned about Green Valley Ranch almost by accident. While Betty Jo was staying at the lake house, a local attorney contacted her about a scale model of an old Hi-Power Service Station that was connected to her family. She discovered the artist who made the model was actually her uncle, and the conversation eventually led to an unexpected opportunity to buy the original family homestead.
