A 51-year-old woman, who was on Census duty, was robbed of her gold chain in broad daylight at the foot overbridge of the Vandalur railway station on Saturday (August 22, 2026).The video footage of the woman being robbed has gone viral on social media. The Tambaram police said Lebanal Selvi was a resident of Pudhunagar in Mannivakkam, and was working as a teacher at the Oonamancheri Panchayat Union Government Middle School.The teacher was assigned Census duty in Oonamancheri on Saturday evening and was walking back to catch a train home. As she was climbing the steps of the foot overbridge of the Vandalur railway station, an unidentified person wearing a mask, who had been following her, suddenly snatched her gold chain weighing 6.5 sovereigns and fled.Despite the victim calling for help, the assailant escaped by crossing the railway tracks and jumping over a wall.The Mannivakkam police have been alerted, and they are searching for the culprit by examining the CCTV footage.
