The center of Thessaloniki is expected to come under heavy security ahead of the opening of the Thessaloniki International Fair, with police preparing one of their largest security operations in recent years.
Enhanced measures will begin on September 3 and peak during the fair’s opening weekend, when the prime minister is scheduled to deliver a speech and hold his customary news conference. More than 3,500 officers will be deployed, supported by 55 riot police units from Athens, Thessaloniki and elsewhere.
Forces will be stationed around the fairgrounds and at key locations across the city center to protect political figures, secure events and oversee demonstrations and marches.
Traffic restrictions are expected to be extensive. While security measures will be most intensive from September 3-6, the operation will remain in place until the fair concludes.
