A 29-year-old man has been charged with a felony for slamming a car into a group of tourists in Malia, a resort town in the northern coast of Crete, injuring two people.
Authorities said the incident took place on the night of July 19. Based on video footage released by local media, a white car is seen moving along a street packed with tourists and locals standing on both sides of the road. At some point, the driver makes a right turn forcing bystanders to jump out of the way, and then swerves left, hitting two British nationals standing on the opposite side of the road.
Police said a 41-year-old British woman suffered a broken leg and her partner had minor injuries.
The suspect, a Palestinian national, was allegedly admitted during the preliminary investigation that he was the driver of the vehicle and that he was under the influence of alcohol, but then recanted his testimony, saying he got the car after the date of the incident.
After his testimony, he was released after surrendering his driver’s license and vehicle registration.
