A German tourist has accused three men of assault, unlawful detention and attempted extortion during a holiday in Malia, on the Greek island of Crete.

The 18-year-old told authorities that the incident took place shortly after midnight Wednesday at a nightclub, where two Greek nationals and a man from Cameroon allegedly confronted him and a Norwegian friend over claims they had damaged an electronic device.

The men allegedly demanded payment for the damage and, after the tourists denied involvement and refused to pay, forced them into a back room, where they were assaulted and prevented from leaving.

The three suspects were arrested after the German tourist filed a complaint. They later filed a countercomplaint accusing him of making a false report, leading to his arrest as well. Police are investigating the allegations.
