Authorities on the southern island of Crete on Tuesday released a German tourist who was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of espionage for taking photographs of military aircraft.

The 56-year-old man was taken into custody Saturday at Hania airport, a joint civil-military facility. Several people have been arrested for alleged espionage in the area, which hosts a major US military base, particularly after this year’s Persian Gulf crisis.

From the outset he had denied the charges, explaining that he was visiting Greece as a tourist with his wife and daughter. He reportedly explained that he was unaware of any ban on photographing the aircraft.
