A 56-year-old man has been arrested in Crete on suspicion of espionage after allegedly photographing military aircraft and restricted areas at Hania airport, a joint civil-military facility.

The man, a German national, was detained on Saturday afternoon, police said. He was set to appear before judicial authorities early Sunday afternoon, according to state broadcaster ERT.

Authorities said the suspect was using a professional camera to take images inside the airport perimeter. An inspection of the device reportedly revealed photographs of military aircraft and sensitive areas.

In an initial statement to police, the suspect denied any espionage intent, saying he was visiting Crete on holiday.
