The City of Johannesburg has paid off its R5.25 billion overdue electricity debt to Eskom.
The City of Joburg has settled its outstanding R5.25 billion electricity debt to Eskom in full, ending a dispute that had threatened the security of electricity supply to the country’s economic hub.
The Department of Electricity and Energy and the City of Joburg announced on Friday that Eskom had received the final payment, bringing the total overdue amount of R5,255,421,994.16 owed by the City and City Power to zero.
The settlement follows an intervention and mediation process led by Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, which brought the City, City Power and Eskom together to resolve long-running billing disputes.
The resolution also means Eskom has withdrawn the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) process it initiated on 17 May 2026 over the outstanding arrears.
