Ankara’s decision to designate two marine parks under its jurisdiction between the island of Samothraki and Limnos and around Kastellorizo, both of which are outside its territorial waters, leads to observations and thoughts that are worth highlighting.
Although the action does not change the current border regime, it confirms for the umpteenth time and in a clear way that Turkey continues to maintain, undeterred, a clearly threatening stance toward Greece, and indeed with unwavering persistence. This is a political stance aimed at forming threats against the integrity of our country, with the aim of curtailing its sovereignty over half of the Aegean.
That Ankara’s recent decision is part of this policy is readily apparent from the fact that the parks are located outside Turkish territorial waters, potentially covering areas that fall under Greek jurisdiction, while the declaration is in line with the country’s entire expansionist policy in spirit and content. Therefore, Greece’s reaction should not be limited to denouncing Turkey’s move, but should also extend to other actions that will emphatically demonstrate its illegal and unacceptable nature, such as informing the leadership of the European Union, contacting European governments, as well as filing a complaint at the United Nations.
