Turkey is putting its plans for the Aegean into practice. For the first time, it is establishing marine parks beyond its territorial waters, unlike Greece. It is doing so without prior notification, as required by the Athens Declaration, and is clearly preparing further unilateral initiatives. It is obviously betting on the assumption that this will establish a new status quo that Greece will eventually grow accustomed to. We are living through a period of extraordinary global upheaval and heightened Turkish assertiveness. There is an urgent need for planning and immediate action before we become accustomed to a new, increasingly constraining reality.
