SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the Ilocos region brought together fisherfolk, youth, government and nongovernment organizations, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable fisheries when it launched the 2026 FishCoRe Salimbayan on Thursday, Aug. 20.
FishCoRe, or the Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency Project, is a ₱11.42 billion, seven-year (2023-2029) government initiative implemented by BFAR and funded by the World Bank to protect marine ecosystems and boost local fisherfolk livelihoods.
“Salimbayan,” a Filipino word that means “swift, collective movement or a flitting action,” was adopted as a rallying event by the BFAR-led group to help fisherfolk “who face the waves every day” put food on the table, said BFAR Regional Director Remely Lachica.
