The City of Cape Town urged residents to use water sparingly.
While Cape Town’s taps are not in immediate danger of running dry, the City is warning that residents cannot afford to become complacent as water demand rises and forecasts point to a drier end to the rainfall season.
As of August 17, the Western Cape Water Supply System’s six major dams stood at 77.7%, around 12.9% lower than at the same time last year.
Cape Town’s latest water consumption was 847 million litres a day, below the City’s 860 million-litre-a-day winter limit.
The City maintains there is no immediate threat to the water supply, but the combination of lower year-on-year dam levels, uncertain rainfall and higher-than-targeted demand means restrictions have not been ruled out.
