The latest Home Office data shows that applications for sponsored study visas fell by 11% to 381,500 in the year ending July 2026, compared to the previous 12-month period.

This decline in international recruitment largely follows the government's introduction of restrictions in January 2024, which prevent most overseas students from bringing family members to the U.K.

There were 19,200 applications from student dependants in the year ending July 2026, a 6% drop from the previous year and a staggering 87% plunge compared to December 2023, before the restrictions took effect.

The higher education sector has faced an increasingly challenging environment. Beyond the dependant restrictions, recent policy shifts have included shortening the graduate visa period and introducing stricter visa compliance measures in June. These new rules require universities to meet tougher targets for student enrolment and completion while keeping visa refusal rates below 5%.

These policies are actively reshaping student preferences. The latest Home Office figures coincide with an Aug. 11 report by education consultancy Navitas, which concluded that the U.K. is experiencing a significant decline in interest as new government regulations embed into institutional practices.
