During the first quarter of 2026, only 35,625 sponsored study visas were issued. This marks a decline of nearly one-third compared to the same period last year and a 60% drop from the 2023 peak.

This downward trend is widespread, with applications decreasing across all 10 of the U.K.'s largest international student markets. Over the 12 months ending in March, the U.K. granted a total of 409,954 student visas, representing a 3% year-on-year decrease.
