Greece is heading into what could be the longest and most intense spell of heat of the summer, with temperatures expected to climb sharply from Wednesday and remain elevated for at least seven to eight days.
The heatwave is forecast to affect much of the country, with temperatures commonly reaching 37°C to 38°C and locally exceeding 40°C. The most intense conditions are expected over the weekend and could persist towards the end of August.
Athens is expected to see temperatures rise from around 32°C-33°C to approximately 38°C between August 24 and 26, with the highest levels approaching 39°C-40°C. Thessaloniki could reach 36°C-37°C, while nighttime temperatures are also set to rise significantly, with lows around 26°C.
The heat is expected to be particularly intense in Larissa, where temperatures could reach 40°C-41°C. In Athens and Patra, overnight temperatures may climb as high as 28°C-29°C at the peak of the heatwave, offering little relief after sunset.
Forecasters describe the developing pattern as a significant heat anomaly rather than typical August warmth. Warmer air masses are shifting towards Greece and the wider Balkans after temperatures eased across western Europe.
