Marking the 80th year of Independence Day celebration, the Canara Bank presented Dr. Ambedkar Vidya Jyoti Scholarships to eligible girl students from rural background.Presenting the scholarship certificates, District Collector Nishanth Krishna lauded the Canara Bank’s initiative which would encourage more children to equip knowledge.Senior bank officials attributed the scholarship scheme as a tribute to the founder Sri Ammembal Subba Rao Pai, who propagated girls’ education as the basic need for a meaningful development and to encourage education among girl children from socially and economically backward communities and where school dropout has been high.In the last 13 years, since the launch of the scheme, the bank had provided scholarships to 1. 87 lakh SC/ST students with an amount of ₹82 crore up to 2025-26. This year, ie, 2026-27, so far, 47,100 students with an outlay of ₹18.84 crore had so far benefitted, they said.The District Collector gave away cheques to over 200 students from 47 government schools totalling ₹8.64 lakh. The Bank GM A.K. Booma presided over the function.In her address, she said that the scheme is implemented by all rural and semi-urban branches, which selected a meritorious girl student each from classes 5 to 10 from SC/ST communities.The scholarship assistance offered was ₹3,000 per student per year for students of 5th to 7th standards and ₹5,000 each year for students of 8th to 10th standards.Canara Bank DGM D.
