Collector Ranjeet Singh hoisted the national flag and disbursed welfare assistance to the needy at the Independence Day celebration held here on Saturday.Mr. Ranjeet Singh honoured freedom fighter and former civil servant K. Lakshmikanthan Bharathi. Superintendent of Police S. Ashok Kumar was present.The Collector inspected the guard of honour and took the salute from police, NCC cadets, home guards and forest staff.He handed over welfare assistance worth ₹59.92 lakh to 11 beneficiaries and honoured 465 government officials for their meritorious service and eight sportspersons who represented the district in State-level tournaments.A total of 720 students from Kadayanallur Government Higher Secondary School, Karivalamvanthanallur Matha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kuththukkalvalasai St. Mary’s High School, Sambavarvadakarai Government Higher Secondary School, Alwarkurichi Redeemer Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Karivalamvanthanallur AMC Government Higher Secondary School presented colourful cultural events stressing the need for patriotism, national integrity and drug abuse awareness.District Revenue Officer M.
