OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told employees at a July 29 meeting that the company’s enterprise revenue has officially overtaken its consumer business, marking a pivotal shift in how the world’s most prominent AI company actually makes its money.

Even more striking: Friar revealed that OpenAI’s annualized recurring revenue for July alone surpassed the company’s total revenue for the entire second quarter of 2026.

From ChatGPT subscriptions to corporate contracts

As recently as October 2024, roughly 75% of OpenAI’s revenue came from consumer subscriptions. The remaining quarter trickled in from API access and enterprise deals.

By mid-2026, projections indicated enterprise revenue could account for 50% of the total. Friar’s latest disclosure suggests it has now crossed that threshold entirely.
