Despite the Almaraz delay, Spanish deadline for total nuclear phase-out stays at 2035
MADRID – Spain is extending the life of one of its main nuclear power plants “to shield” citizens from global energy price shocks caused by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
The energy ministry’s decision was announced on Friday in the Official State Gazette with confirmation the Almaraz power station would extend its planned closure deadline from 2027 to 2030.
Almaraz, located in the southwestern region of Extremadura, was the first in the government’s nuclear phase-out calendar set to cease operations.
The Almaraz I and II reactors were due to shut in November 2027 and October 2028, to be followed by Spain’s remaining reactors in Catalonia (Ascó I & II, Vandellós II), Valencia (Cofrentes) and Guadalajara (Trillo).
