New summer wildfires broke out Friday in central and southern Greece, as most of the country faced a very high risk of fire amid gale-force winds.
The Fire Service said two water-bombing aircraft were mobilised to help 22 firefighters with nine fire engines on the ground striving to contain a scrub blaze near the town of Tripoli in the Arcadia region of southern Greece.
Another wildfire was burning through scrub near the village of Galatas in the Nafpaktos region of central Greece. Two aircraft, 14 firefighters and 7 fire engines were battling the blaze.
Civil protection authorities have placed Attica and the Greater Athens region, as well as Viotia, Evia, Corinthia and the Argolid, on a maximum category-5 risk of wildfire on the country’s 5-notch scale. Much of the rest of the country, including many Aegean islands, is on category 4.
