MANILA, Philippines — Agricultural damage from the combined effects of Tropical Depressions Luis and Maymay, along with the enhanced southwest monsoon, has reached close to P700 million, according to recent estimates by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
In its Thursday bulletin, the DA said the farm sector posted P689.66 million in losses due to weather disturbances, almost double the P347.37 million recorded by the agency on Wednesday.
Some 17,527 metric tons of agricultural produce were damaged, affecting 19,634 hectares (ha) of land tilled by around 21,115 farmers in the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) and Western Visayas regions.
Affected commodities include rice, corn, cassava, high-value crops, livestock and poultry.
