CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The agriculture sector of Occidental Mindoro absorbed an estimated P21.86 million in losses due to the combined impact of Tropical Storms Luis and Maymay and the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat,” the Provincial Agriculture Office reported on Thursday.

As of August 10, initial consolidated damage reports show that damage to agriculture due to the weather disturbances hit P21,860,336.76, affecting 576 farmers and fishermen across 778.37 hectares of production areas in seven municipalities.

Rice production bore the brunt of the damage, accounting for P15.44 million in losses for 454 farmers on 638.17 hectares of rice farms.

Corn production followed with P5.11 million in damage involving 49 farmers and 104.90 hectares of farmland.
