MANILA, Philippines — Having a uniform anti-littering ordinance and the employment of anti-garbage police for all local government units (LGUs) within Metro Manila may help avoid floods during the rainy season, Las Piñas Rep. Mark Anthony Santos said on Thursday.
In a statement, Santos said the two proposals would allow LGUs to address improper waste disposal, which is still considered as one of the top reasons why floods continue to affect the National Capital Region — due to drainages and waterways being blocked by garbage.
The lawmaker noted that such policies have to be integrated as LGUs in Metro Manila are “interconnected.”
“Metro Manila is one interconnected community. Our policies against littering should also be consistent. There should be no safe haven for people who recklessly throw their garbage on streets, sidewalks, waterways and other public spaces,” Santos said.
