MANILA, Philippines—An environmental group on Friday urged the government to adopt policies that reduce the production of waste, instead of focusing only on disposal of garbage.

The statement comes following disasters that happened in landfills.

In a statement, EcoWaste Coalition said the string of “landfill disasters” that occurred in Cebu, Rizal, Navotas and Davao “unmasked the inadequacy of current policies centered on managing trash rather than stopping it.”

The group urged the government to “move away from unsustainable, end-of-pipe solutions,” and adopt policies that “eradicate waste at source.”
