MANILA, Philippines — The “sea of trash” that formed in a waterway in Parañaque City in the wake of the flash floods last weekend prompted no less than President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to see the site up close on Wednesday.
While such eyesores are not uncommon in many creeks and river segments in Metro Manila, the particular blanket of trash at the Redemptorist Water Channel appalled many for its sheer volume—and cast doubts on the effectiveness of earlier initiatives to curb plastic pollution in the capital.
After three days of “clearing operations,” close to 400 tons of garbage, enough to fill 72 dump trucks, have been scooped out of the water, the Parañaque City government reported on Wednesday.
The work was far from over when Mr. Marcos arrived.
