Off-duty LEAP officer arrested after crashing into a shack in Delft while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Residents living inside a makeshift shack in Delft got a surprise visitor on Wednesday when an intoxicated off-duty law enforcement officer crashed into their home.

The 31-year-old officer allegedly lost control of his work bakkie and crashed into the shack inside the Covid informal settlement shortly before 1pm. No injuries were reported.

The LEAP officer was arrested and detained at Delft police station for driving under the influence and reckless driving. He expected to make his first appearance at Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Law enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, said the department was alerted to the incident shortly before 1pm.
