A video has emerged showing the shocking moment an axe-wielding suspect launched a violent attack on a police officer outside the Delft Police Station in the early hours of Monday morning, leaving the constable seriously injured.
The incident, which has sparked widespread condemnation, unfolded shortly after 2am at the station. Footage of the assault, which is now circulating, captures the moment the officer was standing outside the Community Service Centre at approximately 2.05 am before being approached by a suspect armed with an axe.
The suspect is seen striking the officer on the head, causing serious injuries. A fellow police officer who witnessed the attack immediately intervened and fired warning shots, prompting the suspects to flee the scene.
The suspects abandoned their vehicle and attempted to evade arrest, leading to a coordinated pursuit involving South African Police Service (SAPS) members and Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers.The operation resulted in the arrest of three suspects—two men aged 23 and 25, and a 23-year-old woman. Police also recovered the axe believed to have been used in the attack.
